Kirby Muxloe is a large village and civic parish which forms part of the district of Blaby in Leicestershire, England. Located west of Leicester, its proximity to the town has led to it being included within the Leicester urban area. The boundary of the Forest East ward of Leicester runs alongside the A47 Hinkley Road. According to the 2001 census, the parish had 4,523 residents, rising to 4,667 in the 2011 census.

The name “Kirby” is from Caeri, the Danish man who founded the community here at the end of the 9th century or early 10th century. The settlement was known as Carbi, and then Kirby. The village is recorded as Carbi in Domesday Book.

At this time, the lands of Kyrby-muxloe were held by Hugh de Grandsmaynel and William Peverel. His father, Sir Leonard Hastings, owned modest manors in Leicestershire and Gloucestershire, which had long been established in the family. On 14 April 1474, Hastings acquired the manorial rights of Kyrby from the Peakemans, though for a number of years before that time he had been renting it.

In 1480, he began building a moated castle, Kirby-Muxloe, in time for the War of the Roses. However, work on the castle stopped shortly after Lord Hastings was executed at the Tower of London for treason, ordered by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, a few days after becoming King Richard III. William was caught up in a race to the throne following Edward IVs death.

In 1582, the name of the village was recorded as Kirby-muckleby, with variations of Mullock, Muckle. About 50 years later, in 1628, disafforestation in the Lester forest took place, effectively splitting the lands around Kirby Muxloe between woodland and pasture. The results are seen to this day.

In 1636, the Hastings family sold the Castle, as well as their holdings at Kirby and Braunstone, to the Winstanleys. The first formal usage of Kirby Muxloe was in 1703, in The Oxford Dictionary of Placenames, where it was stated that Muxloe was the family name. There is a family like this, but they lived three miles away, in the village of Dewford.
