Kings Heath (historically, and sometimes still, Kings Heath) is a suburban area in southern Birmingham, England, located four miles south of the center. Historically, it was located in Worcestershire, the suburb immediately south of Moseley, on the A435, the Alcester Road. Kings Heath came to existence as a village during the 18th century, with improvements on the Alcester-to-Birmingham road acting as the catalyst for new houses and farms. Prior to that, the area had been mostly uninhabited waste land, administered by Kings Norton, the royal constituency. The streets running from the High Street were predominantly made up of terraced, owner-occupied pre-1919 buildings.
A range of independent shops took advantage of comparatively cheaper rents on side streets off High Street, leading to a proliferation of boutiques and the beginnings of a cafe culture (organic). In 2008, businesses agreed to set up a business improvement district, where a portion of the tax revenue from their local businesses is scraped to be spent directly on improving and promoting the district.
The local community still calls Kings Heath “the Village”, although it has been a part of Birmingham for more than a century. Its central area, at the junction of High Street/Vicarage Road, has been developed into a handsome public plaza, used as a site for the monthly farmers market and other events.
On 28 July 2005, Kings Heath was struck by a large tornado (by European standards) that damaged a number of shops in High Street and All Saints Church. The tornado then moved on to damage numerous homes in Balsall Heath. In 2021, the area was named as an official Gayborhood, along with places such as the Castro, San Francisco, and Pariss Marais. Kings Heath has a number of schools including Colmore infant, nursery and primary schools, St. Dunstans Catholic primary school, Kings Heath primary school, Kings Heath boys, Wheelers Lane Technical College, King Edward VI Camp Hill school for boys, King Edward VI Camp Hill school for girls, and Bishop Challoner Catholic college.
