Hyde is a small town in the English county of Tameside, Greater Manchester, with a population of 34,003 as of 2011. Historically based in Cheshire, it is five miles (8 km) north-east of Stockport, six miles (10 km) west of Glossop, and 7+ 1/4 miles (11.5 km) east of Manchester. Newton Hall was in existence by the 13th century. The district formed the parish township of St Marys, Stockport. Its name was taken from The Hide, a measure of land used for taxation purposes, taken as being the amount of land needed to sustain a farming household.

In later times, it was taken to equal 120 acres. In the late eighteenth century, the area which would become the centre of town was little more than a collection of houses known as Red Pump Street. Gee Cross was far larger, and Hyde was still used merely to denote the manor house Hyde on the banks of the River Tame.

Altogether, there were just 3,500 inhabitants in the parish as of 1801. The city was mostly a creature of the nineteenth century and of the industrial revolution.

Hyde grew in population through the success of the cotton mills in the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with 40 working mills at one time. By 1872 there were just 27 left, half the remaining mills closed between 1921 and 1939, and there is just one functioning mill in the town today.

There are a number of families who owned mills, including Sidebotham, Hibbert, and Horsfield families. The mills principal employers were the Ashton family, who ran a successful co-operative spinners and weavers business. Most mills were solely focused on a single process.

The Ashton family built the Hyde Chapel in Stockport Road, Gwenyth. The Ashton brothers mill was recently demolished to make way for housing.

St Georges church was built as an easement chapel for St Marys, Stockport, in 1832. It was built on the initiative of John Hyde Clarke, of Hyde Hall, and was the first place of church-of-england worship in the town. St Georges became a parish church for parts of Hyde Township in 1842.

Later additions included the steeple, boathouses beside the canal, the funeral chapel, the vestry rooms, and a number of parish rooms. The church has a 110-foot-tall (34-meter) tower, which houses eight bells and a clock.

The Peak Forest Canal was built via Hyde, running from Ashton-under-Lyne to Woodley, Romley and Marple. Captain Clarkes bridge, originally named the Woodend Canal Bridge, is situated at the end of Woodend Lane. The bridge was built before Captain Clarke rose to fame, so it may have been known as Captain Clarkes Bridge after he retired and lived there.
