Hither Green is in south-east London, England and is part of The London Borough of Lewisham, it is 10.6km south-east of Charing Cross. Hither Green was distinguished in the late 19th and the early 20th century. The Hither Green Railway station runs through the main center of the entire area and divides it into an ‘east-side’ focused on Staplehurst Road and a ‘west-side’ focused on Hither Green Lane at Springbank.
The area is also very well known for The Hither Green Rail Crash in which 49 people were killed. On a busy sunday evening back on 5th November 1967, a train service was running from Hastings to London Charing Cross where a train had derailed near the Hither Green Maintenance Depot in London – this was between Hither Green and Grove Park railway stations. Many of the passengers were standing, one of the 12 coaches derailed and killed 49 passengers. In Britain, this was the sixth worst train/rail disaster in terms of death and has not been used or surpassed since, for everyone’s safety.
Overall, Hither Green has a good selection old stately homes and new developments and is a popular choice for all families because of good schools and many other activities.
We all know that learner drivers, instructors and examiners love to read about pass rates, so we have gone and done some research and have put together some statistics for you. Overall, UK has 45.95 of passing their test, that is nearly half of the people. On the other hand, in Greater London, the pass rate is slightly lower than UK itself and currently stands at 40.8%. So you must be wondering what the pass rate in Hither Green is, for this information, please see the table below.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
39.0% | 42.0% | 46.6% | 48.7% | 48.6% |
For Hither Green, the pass rates are not that bad, and are just sitting at a slightly lower rate than the UK itself. So we would say that there is not much to complain about the pass rates here. Just remember, as soon as you focus on yourself and how hard you want to work, pass rates should not matter.
As Hither Green is based in the heart of London, you can expert many urban roads, some with faded road markings.
Narrow Residential Roads
You will spend a considerable amount of time during your semi-intensive driving lessons in Hither Green on residential roads. There are many residential roads in the area which can cause a problem with meeting oncoming vehicles and also getting close to parked cars. Whatever the situation, the DTC driving instructor will teach you to use the MSM routine.
During your practical test, as soon as you see an oncoming vehicle approaching, the first thing you must do is to check the rear view mirror. After this, it would be advisable to slightly ease off the accelerator pedal as this will allow you time to think and decide. Remember that the driving test at Hither Green is based on safety before anything else. Therefore, if you have any doubt about whether to proceed or to stop, it would be advisable to take the side of caution and stop.
Faded road markings
There are a few residential roads with faded road markings that are still visible but you do need to be actively looking out for them. These include give-way lines at small crossroads.
Dual Carriageways
There are some dual carriageways such as the A20 Sidcup road, and the A205 that the examiner may take you on. If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.
