Hatfield is a town and civic parish in Hertfordshire, England, within the Welwyn Hatfield constituency. It had a population of 29,616 in 2001, and 39,201 in the 2011 census. Hatfield House, home to the Marquess of Salisbury, forms the core of the Old Town. From the 1930s, when De Havilland opened the plant, to the 1990s, when British Aerospace closed it, the aircraft-design and-manufacturing business employed more people there than in any other sector. Hatfield was one of the new towns built after the war, surrounding London, and has a lot of period modernist architecture.

The University of Hertfordshire is based there. Hatfield is 20 miles (30 km) north of London, next to the A1(m) Motorway, and has direct trains to Londons Kings Cross, Finsbury Park, and Moorgate railway stations. There has been a large rise in commuters working in London moving into the area. In 2022, TV estate expert Phil Spencer named Hatfield the second best place to live for commuting regulars in London, based on the time on train, the prices of homes and the attractions that the town has.

Previously, in the Early Saxon period, Hatfield was known as Hetfelle. However, it became known as Hetfeld when King Edgar gave the monastery at Ely 5000 acres (20 km2) of land in the 970s.

Hatfield is recorded in Domesday Book of 1086 as belonging to the abbey of Ely, and, unusually, the original census data used by Domesdays compilers has survived, giving us slightly more insight than the Domesday records that were eventually produced. The town was known as Bishops Hatfield at this time. Hatfield House was the seat of Cecils, Marquesses of Salisbury. Elizabeth Tudor was imprisoned there for three years at what is today known as Old Palace, Hatfield Park.

Legend has it she learned here about her ascension to queenship in 1558, sitting under an oak tree in the park. She held her first council at Hatfields Great Hall (Old Palace).

In 1851, the course of the Great Northern Road (now A1000) was altered so as not to pass over the grounds of Hatfield House.
