Harpurhey is a northern urban outskirts area in Manchester, in North West England, located three miles (4.8 km) north-east of the centre.

Historically a Lancashire town, it had a population of 17,652 at the 2011 census.

The Harpurhey borough includes Kingsbridge Manor, Barnes Green, the Shiredale Manor, and Baywood Manor. Harpurhey was recorded in 1320 as “Harpourhey”, meaning “enclosure with hedges, belonging to one named Harpour”, who owned the site during the fourteenth century. This small borough, which was once called Harpurhey and Gotherswick, lay either side of the Manchester-Middleton Road, stretching westwards into the River Irk.

In 1830, it was described as being full of pretty views. Harpurhey was included as part of Manchesters Parliamentary Boroughs from the time it was created, but was only made a Municipal Borough until 1885. It ceased to be a township in 1896, becoming part of the new Township of North Manchester.

Harpurhey is in the constituency of Blackley and Broughton, represented in the House of Commons by Labour MP Graham Stringer, first elected to the Old Manchester Blackley constituency in 1997. Prior to being elected to parliament, he was the councillor for Harpurhey since 1982, and the Leader of Manchester City Council since 1984.
