Handsworth is a suburb of, and a part of, Birminghams central business district, located in the West Midlands. Historically located in Staffordshire, Handsworth lies immediately outside the center of Birmingham, and is close to the city’s town of Smethwick. The name Handsworth comes from the name of its Saxon proprietor, Hodes, and from the Old English word weorthing, meaning a farm or manor.
It was recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086, as a possession of William fitz-Ansculf, the lord of Dudley, though it would only have been a very small village then, surrounded by farmland and vast woods. Historically within the Staffordshire County, it remained a small village from the 13th to 18th centuries. Accommodation was built for mill workers, and the village rapidly grew, with over 6000 residents living in the parish by 1851.
Work began on the construction of St. James church in the same year. Later, St Michaels Church was built as the sister church of St James.
The census 1881 recorded that there were about. By the census of 1911, that had more than doubled, reaching 68,610.
The growth of the built environment was irregular, with many streets of Handsworth showing a mix of building types and periods: some of the finest Victorian buildings in the town are included. Handsworth has two grammar schools: the Grammar School of Handsworth, and King Edward VIs Handsworth School (for girls). St Andrews church is a listed building in Oxhill Road, and it also holds Sunday School classes in a smaller building at the corner of Oxhill Road and Church Lane. It is also home to Handsworth Park, which underwent major regeneration in 2006, a bustling Soho road shopping district, and St Marys church, containing the remains of industrial revolution founders Watt, Murdoch, and Boulton.
The 1901 Red Lion public house was listed as Grade II* in 1985, but has been vacant since 2008 and is considered to be “at risk”. Handsworth Parish was transferred from Staffordshire to Warwickshire, becoming a part of Birmingham, 1911. The redbrick building, which includes a watchtower, is seen in this photo, was initially the District Councils offices in Soho Road.
