Guildford is a small town in Surrey, England. It is located 28 miles south-west of London, on the A3 trunk road between the capital city and Portsmouth. The town had an estimated population of around 80,000 as of the 2011 Census, and is the centre of the wider Guildford Borough, with a 2018 estimated population of 147,889 residents. Guildford has Saxon roots, with historians attributing its location to the presence of a cleft in the North Downs, with the river Wear being crossed by the Harrow Way.

The construction of the Wey Navigation and the Basingstoke Canal, in the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively, connected Guildford with the waterway network which helped to fuel its prosperity. In the 20th century, the University of Surrey was added, as was Guildfords Anglican cathedral. Due to the recent developments running northwards from Guildford, as well as links with the area around Woking, Guildford is now officially part of the south-western edge of the Greater London Built-up Area, as defined by the Office for National Statistics.

The first evidence of human activity in the Guildford area comes from St Katherines Hill, where Mesolithic stone tools were found. There were probably Bronze and Iron Age settlements also on the hill. The land that is now taken up by Christs College and the manor house was farmed during the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman periods. Traces of a second-century villa were discovered on Broadstreet Common in an excavation carried out in 1998.
