Featherstone is a small town and civic ward within Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, located two miles south-west of Pontefract. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, in 2011 its population was 15,244. Featherstone railway station is located on the Pontefract line. Although much of its population growth took place around the industrial revolution, Featherstone can trace its history back far further.

The Domesday Book (1086) records that “in Feestane [Featherstone] and Prestone [Purston] and Arduwic [Hardwick] and Ausle [Nostell], Ligulf had 16 acreages for the money, and there were probably six ploughs”. . A local public house, The Travellers Rest, is thought to date from the 17th century, while the former Jubilee Hotel, a listed building now converted into flats, once provided a retreat for rich Victorians and their horses. Standing stones outside the village suggest there is evidence for an ancient Druid Grove. The original village is today known as North Featherstone (at the junction of B6134 and B6421), arranged around All Saints Church, joined with the modern centre by Featherstone Lane.

The Featherstones lived in the Hall at Eccles (now demolished), a small village in Eccles, around one mile west. What is known today as Featherstone is a later development (originally called South Featherstone) next to the railway station and village of Purston Jaglin. Like many surrounding areas, Featherstone was developed around the coal mines. Coal has been mined in Featherstone since the 13th century, with remains of the Bell Pits still visible to the north of Park Lane in North Featherstone.
