Epping is a market town and a civic parish within the Forest of Epping in Essex, England. The town is 17 miles (30 km) north-east of the centre of London, is enclosed by the northern edge of the Epping Forest, and is situated on the land rise between the river Roding and river Lea valleys. Epping is a terminus for London Undergrounds Central Line. The town has many heritage buildings listed as Grade I and Grade II, as well as Class III.

The weekly market, dating from 1253, is held every Monday.

In 2001, the parish had a population of 11,047, rising to 11,461 in the 2011 census. Epping became a twin with the German city of Eppingen, located north-west of Baden-Wurttemberg, in 1981. “Eppinga”, a small community with several scattered farms and a chapel at the edge of the woods, was mentioned in Domesday Book of 1086.

However, the settlement mentioned is known today as the Upland Epping. It is unknown when present-day Epping was first settled.

By the middle of the 12th century, the settlement known as Epping Heath (later named Epping Street) had developed to the south of the Epping uplands, resulting from clearing the forests for farming. In 1253, King Henry III granted the right to conduct weekly markets on Epping Street, which helped to establish the town as a trading hub, and has continued until today (the selling of livestock on High Street continued until 1961). The linear village of Epping Heath developed into a small, high-road town, with developments taking place in the early nineteenth century along the now high street and Hemnall street. Hemnall Street was, until 1894, within the parish of Theddon Garnon, as was the railway station.

Up to 25 trams and mail coaches per day passed through the town from London on their way to Norwich, Cambridge, and Bury St Edmunds. By the turn of the 19th century, 26 coach inns lined the high street.

Two remain today as public houses: The George and Dragon and The Black Lion.

The arrival of the railway ended coach travel, and the town declined, but revived with the 1865 extension of the rail line to Loughton, and with the arrival of motor cars.
