Ellistown is a village approximately 2 miles (3 km) south of Coalville, North-West Leicestershire, United Kingdom. It is named for Colonel Joseph Joel Ellis, who died in 1885. The population in the 2011 census is included within Ellistown and Battleflats Civil Parish. The hamlet has a Community Primary School, two village shops, and a Hairdressing Salon. There is one working-class club, Ellistown FC.
Ellistown is located right inside the Eastern Boundary of National Forest. Ellistown is named for Col. Joseph Joel Ellis, a native of London, but it has a history that goes back much further than that. From the fourteenth century, it was within Sparkenhoe Hundred and in Ibstock Parish. Ecclesiastically, from the English Reformation until 1926, this area was part of the diocese of Peterborough, and then became part of the new Diocese of Leicester.
The village was developed by the Victorians to mine coal. Around 1140, Swinfen Grange was one of two manor houses given to the abbot of Garendon Abbey by nobleman Robert Barton, near present-day Shepshe. Swinfen was the place of residence for the Abbots warders, and was just a small mud-and-wattle built settlement, with three strip fields, enclosed by Charnwood Forest.
When the abbey was disbanded for Henry VIII, Garendon Abbey gave up their land to the Crown, who then sold it off or allowed it. Swinfen Grange was let in 1531 for 7 pounds a year to a John Pykeringe.
At this time, it appears the name changed to “Pykeringe Grange” following the initial tenant, though there is some evidence to suggest that the names Swinfen Grange and Pykeringe Grange might both have been used at one time or another. The area which became Ellistown was called Swinfen Rushes in the early nineteenth century, whereas that which is now called Pickeringe Grange appears to have extended as far as the crossing point where the Houglescote-Bagworth Pony Road crosses Beverleys Lane. The history of the manor is shown at length in John Nichols A History of Leicestershire, Volume IV, and written 30 years later by John Curtice.
The location of the medieval Grange House is nearly a mile (1.6 km) south of the village of Ellistown. It was originally the seat of the Moate estate.
