Earl Shilton is a market town in Leicestershire, England, approximately five miles (8 km) from Hinkley, about 10 miles (16 km) from Leicester. The 2011 census recorded a population of 10,041. The towns name is from the Old English for farm/settlement in the shelved ground. In Domesday Book (1086) it is recorded as Sheltone.

Schulton, or Scheltone, is an old word meaning a shelf; so Shilton is Scheltone, or a shelf-town, the origin being supported by the fact that the village stands at the summit of a long, narrow ridge, to the south-west of the parish. The Earl of Shiltons village was to have developed at Shilton Hill, in what was to become South Leicestershire. Below the hill lay the old road, known as Salt Road, which connected east to west Leicestershire. A tribe known as the Korieltauvi constructed the road, running on the southern edge of the Great Leicester Forest, a huge area of woodland that completely covered western Leicestershire, stretching as far north as Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The saltire was the main trade artery and pass through the next several centuries.

The Korieltauvi tribe moved from mainland Europe into Britain sometime after 100 BCE. They were a confederation of Belgic warriors, carving a kingdom that stretched from the River Humber to southern Leicestershire. These Ancient Britons were not actually one cohesive tribe, but rather an amalgamation of individuals sharing a common lifestyle. The tribes did not usually depend on hillforts to protect them. The Korieltauvi seem to have been better farmers than warriors, since they lived in settlements on low ground, often near streams, often surrounded, and sometimes hidden, by areas of dense woods.
