Droylsden is a small town in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester, England, located 4.1 miles (6.6 km) east of Manchester city centre, and 2.2 miles (3.5 km) west of Ashton-under-Lyne, and had a population of 22,689 at the 2011 census. Within the boundaries of the historical County of Lancashire, in the mid-19th century, Droylsden was growing as a mill town along the Ashton Canal. From the early 1930s, the population of Droylsden expanded rapidly, becoming an area for the housing surplus of nearby Manchester. Since 1785, Droylsdens Fairfield district has been the site of the Moravian church. Droylsden was settled about AD900.
Before Droylsden became a part of Greater Manchester, it was popularly known by Mancunians as the “Silly Country”. One suggestion for the origins of this nickname is that, once a year, a number of town folk would attend an annual carnival, taking a pig with them, sitting on a wall and watching the passing revelry. The Pig On The Wall Public House, converted from the farmhouse in 1978, got its name from this story.
The first machine-woven towels in the world–terry towels–were manufactured in 1851 by W.M. Christie and Sons, at Fairfield Mills, Droylsden. William Miller Christys son, Henry Christy, had brought a woven towel from Turkey back from the 1840s, which the Christys managed to replicate with adapted looms. Their Turkish royal towels became well known, and Queen Victoria had regular orders.
The mill closed at the end of the 80s, and Tesco opened a supermarket in the place in 1997. The construction of a marina began in 2007, with completion in 2012. The marina has 92 three- and four-bedroom houses, as well as 291 one- and two-bedroom apartments, and offices, restaurants, and shops along the waterfront.
