Darnall is a suburban area in the east of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Darnall is about three miles (5 km) east-north-east of the Sheffield city centre. Darnall was originally a small village, often included in the area with Attercliffe. William Walker, the occupant of this settlement, was one of a number of men who were said to be Charles Is executioner. A mansion known as Darnall Hall was built in 1723 in Darnall town centre by the Staniforth family; it became a private “psychiatric hospital” in 1845.

Darnall had a population of 10,672 in 2011. The new ground at Darnall was laid for cricket in the 1820s. Although it was used only a handful of years before being replaced with a field in Hyde Park, it was described as being Englands finest. Holy Trinity Church, Darnalls first, was built in 1840, followed by the Hospital in 1855, and a School in 1875. By the middle of the nineteenth century, it was a hub of agriculture and coal-mining, and was known for amateur Greyhound racing.

Industry was also significant, the Don Glass Works being established about 1793, augmented by the Darnall Works Steel Foundry from 1835. In the late 19th century, an area was built up to accommodate ironworkers working at the larger Lower Don Valley foundries. Darnall railway station was built on the Sheffield to Lincoln line to serve the outskirts. Unemployment increased, with foundries closing or furloughing many employees, starting in the 1970s, and the area is now amongst the citys poorest. A mixture of council homes, 1880s ironworker huts, small terraced houses, and 1930s semi-detached private homes form the accommodation in the Darnall area.
