Dadlington is a village administered by Hinkley and Bosworth district council, in Leicestershire, England. It lies between Hinckley, Market Bosworth, and Nuneaton. The village has a population of about 301 people, and contains a 13th-century church (St. James), a pub (The Dog and Hedgehog) and a hotel (Ambion Court). The Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal runs through the village. The village name means the Farm/settlement of the Dadela.
A silver gilt white pig, a Richard III-owned badge given to supporters in great numbers, was found at Feen Hole, outside of Daedela, in 2010. In 1511, the Warden of St. Jamess Chapel, Dadlington, asked King Henry VIII to establish a choir-house to commemorate those killed in the battle of Bosworth, 1485 (the chapel yard was a primary site for burials for those killed). A letter of trust was issued, and a chantry was established in the bare minimum, but it was disbanded in 1547 under Edward VI, with such foundations being abolished generally. In 1985, the centenary of the battle, Dadlington (through the publications of Dr Colin Richmond and later of Dr Peter Foss) became a focus for controversy about the site of the battle, now leading to the large-scale reassessment of the battlefield and scenario now being undertaken by Leicestershire County Council. During the English Civil War, troops from parliamentary garrisons in Tamworth and Coventry visited Dadlington, seeking horses and a place to be freed.
A statement submitted by a constable to a county commission for Warwickshire in June 1646 revealed that a horse belonging to Anne Turton, widow, had been stolen by one Mr. Burdett, described as “a soldier under Captain Turton, Tamworth”, on 12th March 1643. A few months later, a “Mason, a soldier under Captain Turton” (probably John Mason, who was also listed in the garrison at Tamworth) took a horse valued at PS2.6.8 from that same Ann Turton, who was likely related to the Captain. Colonel Purfoys soldiers from Coventry took advantage of the free quarters, “for a night and a portion of a day”, estimated at PS2.10, whilst Captain Flowerss footsoldiers from Coventry took a horse worth 2s from Michael Cox, and Captain Ottaways soldiers took a horse worth 5s from Thomas Everard.
