Burngreave is a neighborhood in inner-city Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, located to the north of the city centre. The population of the ward, taken at the 2011 census, was 27,481.
It began to grow during the latter part of the 19th century. Prior to that, this area was mostly covered with the burnt Greave forest. Most of the wooded area was covered by Burntgreave cemetery, built in 1860 (consecrated 1861) and expanded during the early 1900s.
Grimesthorpe Lane, running through Burngreave, is a very old road which follows the route of the Roman Rhig, a human-made defensive ridge–probably built by Celtic Brigantes tribes–that once ran from near the Vickers towards Mexborough. Although there is little physical evidence for an earlier settlement at Burngreave, we know an Iron Age hillfort was discovered at Rhee Woods. The people who built it were probably of a Celtic tribe, the Brigantes. In the early 20th century, you can still see the round banks of the keep that they built.
In 1922 though, this was destroyed in order to construct the sports stadium (now owned by Sheffield United Football Club). In the 15th and 16th centuries, Burngreave was a stretch of open country, with a few farms, fields, and woods. The name Burngreave was first recorded in 1440 as Bryons Grve, meaning the wood of Bryon.
This is shown in earlier maps at the present-day site of Burngreave Cemetery, and alongside Burngreave Road. During the Tudor period, Sheffield began to develop, but Burngreave remained at its edge. Looking down on the Peaksmoor at this time, one could see rolling hills and farmland leading down towards Ladys Bridge, where a concentration of shops and houses had developed around a market-place near Sheffield Castle.
