Burmantofts is an area of 1960s tall-rise housing blocks in east central Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, next to the centre of the city and St. Jamess Hospital. It is a ethnically diverse area, with significant African Caribbean and Irish communities, but it suffers from the social problems that characterise similar areas nationwide. From 1859 until 1957, Burmantofts was home to Burmantofts Pottery, manufacturer of pottery pipes and building materials. In the early twentieth century, Burmantofts was a major center for the textile industry.
Burtons textile mill was located in this district; it is still owned by Burtons, but is now used as storage. Burmantofts is an area of 1960s tall-rise housing estates in inner-city East Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, next to the town centre and St. Jamess Hospital. The Burghers, from whom Burtons cloth was named, ran artisanal businesses in the town, growing crops in their ft, like wheat, that would be processed by the mill next door, at present-day Miles Hill.
It was at the edge of Yorkshires coalfields, and the mining of coal and quarrying clay led to jobs making bricks and pottery. Notably, in 1842, Lassie and Wilcock bought 100 acres of land just north of Neppet Lane, discovered that they could mine both coal and clay from a single pit, and became a coal merchant and brick maker. In 1870 it became Wilcock and Co, who also sold drainage pipes, although it only took up 4 acres, with the rest farmland.
Further development of the site, and of new products, led to Burmantofts Pottery, which was made there until 1957. In 1878, Burmantofts was the location of the first municipal waste-burning incinerator in Leeds, using the chimney from a former industry.
