Braunstone is a civic parish, the largest within Blaby ward of Leicestershire, England, now known as the town of Braunstone, or more commonly as Braunstone town. In 2007, the population was about 15,000. There were about 7500 households, including the township of Thorpe Ashtley. The 2011 census saw a rise in population in the civic ward of 16,850. Braunstone is mentioned in Domesday Book of 1086, which gives the population as “two sockmen and four wallins”.

It is immediately outside Leicesters town boundaries, and the portion of the former civic parish that is now within the town boundaries is also called Braunstone. This part of the parish, containing the larger Council Estate, was detached in 1935 from Blaby ward and Braunstone Parish, becoming part of Leicester County Borough, thus the current division. The use of Braunstone Town is of a recent vintage, being an effort by the Braunstone Town Council to differentiate its village from its namesake council estate. Braunstone Town is next to the M1 Motorway (junction 21), and is adjoined by the Meridian business park and leisure park, as well as Fosse shopping park and Grove Triangle shopping centre.

Although the borough does not itself have its own railway station, Leicester Station is nearby. Leicester PlusBus, is a scheme that allows you to purchase a rail ticket and bus ticket together for a discount.

The first recorded date of a human discovery is an Bronze Age (c.1000 BCE) hatchet found in 1893.

The Roman Road, built by Julius Caesar, was next, running southwards through Narborough Road sites, and up towards the High Cross, near Sharnford.

It is also obvious that the Vikings in earlier or later periods had settled at Braunstone or nearby, thus the names derived in this vicinity of the name Viking–Lubbesthorpe, Countesthorpe, Enderby, Elmesthorpe, Cosby, Kilby, Kirby, and so on. Throughout the aforementioned periods, Braunstone was covered by woods, like the majority of surrounding shires – in what is known as the Leicester Woods. But as in most forests, they were composed of a number of larger woodlands, which contained smaller earlier settlements, or villages, connected by rough tracks – the source of much of our public footpaths.
