Bramley is a borough of west Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. It is part of Bramley and Stanningley Ward of the City of Leeds, which had a population of 21,334 in the 2011 census. The ward is an older industrial district, with a large amount of 19th-century architecture, with council housing from the 20th century to the east, and private suburban housing to the west.

The name Bramley is first attested in Domesday book of 1086, under the names Brameleia and Brameleia. The name is derived from the Old English words brom (broom) and leah (open ground in the woods). The name therefore once meant an open area characterised by brooms.

At the time of Domesdays surveys, the core settlement was likely to have been on Stows Hill, which developed in a linear pattern down what is now the town street. The water pumps that remain on Stocks Hill, and stone water troughs, are remnants of Bramleys medieval past.

The accompanying blue plaque reads: Stocks Hill, Bramley. This historic pump house and watering hole is the last remaining memory of the village green at Bramley, surrounded by medieval cottages and yards. The green contains the Stock, Pillory, and an eight-foot high post which remembers Leeds market being held there in the 1644-45 Plague”.

The area experienced an industrial boom in the 19th century, with associated increases in the population, mostly as a result of the growth of the woollen textile industry at the beginning of the century, and of the shoemaking and engineering industries at the end.

The antiquarian Benjamin Wilson was the first to write a history of Bramley, published in 1860. He donated his collections to the City Museum of Leeds, including the bottle of the Witch found at Whitecoats (Whitecoats), Bramley, in 1861.
