Bramley is a village and civic parish approximately three miles (5 km) south of Guildford, within the Borough of Waverley, in Surrey, South East England. Most of the parish lies within the Outstanding Natural Beauty area of the Surrey Hills.
Evidence for Iron Age times exists within its boundaries, but records document a village in the late Anglo-Saxon period of the Kingdom of England, and trace its expansion and fragmentation through the medieval period. Much of the architecture is linear, following the route from Horsham: many such buildings have survived, and there is a large preservation area in the village. The name Bramley is Old English (Anglo-Saxon) in origin; as with “Bromley”, an earlier form, it means clearing, or lea of the brumb).
The wider region was sparsely settled prior to the arrival of the Saxons[citation needed]. The builders of the Iron Age hillfort of Hascombe may have included farmers from the area around Wintershall and Thorncombe Street, present-day Bramley, but there is no evidence for any earlier settlements within the hamlet and there is no evidence for any Roman settlement. The settlement appears as the Brilege and Bronlee, as part of the six great enclosures of Domesday Book 1086.
These were held by the Bishop of Bayeux (the half-brother of William the Conqueror). His Domesday holdings were: 39 1/ 2 stacks; 3 churches, 5 mills, valued at 1s.6s.0d, 39 ploughs, 20 acres (8.1 ha) meadow, woods valued at 100 hogs. In 1086, its broad boundaries[clarification needed] and richly tilled, fertile ground, with prized mills, made Bramley by annual revenue the largest and best-valued manor in Surrey.
