Bradford is a town in the English county of West Yorkshire. Bradford had a population of 349,561 in the 2011 census. It is the second largest part of the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Borough, behind Leeds, about 8.6 miles (14 km) to the east. The larger Bradford Metropolitan Borough, which is administered by the City, has 539,776 residents, making it the 7th-most populous borough in England.

Bradford, which was historically a part of West Riding of Yorkshire, rose to prominence during the 19th century as a center for internationally important textile manufacturing, especially wool. It was the industrial revolutions “boomtown” and, of the first industrialised settlements, quickly became “the wool capital of the world”; this, in turn, gave rise to its nicknames of “Woolopolis” and “Wooltown”. Lying at the eastern foothills of the Pennines, the areas access to supplies of coal, iron ore, and soft water helped Bradfords manufacturing base grow, which, with its increase in textile manufacturing, led to a surge in population, and was an incentive for civic investment; Bradford has much listed Victorian architecture, including the magnificent Italianate Town Hall. Bradford became a municipal borough in 1847, and received a charter as a town in 1897. Since the 1974 Local Government Reforms, Bradfords urban boundaries are in the Metropolitan Borough of City of Bradford.

From the mid-20th century, deindustrialisation caused Bradfords textile industry and industrial base to wane, and it has faced similar economic and social challenges as other parts of post-industrial northern England ever since, including poverty, unemployment, and social unrest. Bradford has a substantial economy within the Yorkshire and Humber region; it is the third largest, with an estimated GDP of about PS10 billion, provided mostly by finance and manufacturing industries. Bradford has also emerged as a tourist destination, becoming the first Unesco city of film, with attractions including the National Science & Media Museum, Bradford City Park, Alhambra Theatre, and Cartwright Hall. Bradford is set to be crowned UK City of Culture in 2025, having won UK City of Culture status on 31 May 2022.
