Bolton is a large city in the North West of England, in the region of Greater Manchester, and is historically and traditionally a part of Lancashire. A former mill town, Bolton has been a textile manufacturing hub since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing the woollen and cotton weaving traditions.
The towns urbanisation and development has broadly paralleled the introduction of textile manufacturing in the industrial revolution. Bolton was a boomtown during the 19th century, and, at its peak in 1929, its 216 cotton mills and 26 dyeing and colouring works made it one of the largest and most productive centres for spinning cotton in the world. The British cotton industry declined dramatically after the first World War, and by the 1980s, the production of cotton had virtually stopped in Bolton.
Bolton, near the West Pennine Moors, is 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Manchester, between Manchester, Darwen, Blackburn, Chorley, Bury and Salford. It is surrounded by a number of nearby towns and villages, all of which together form the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, with Bolton as its administrative centre. The Town of Bolton has a population of 139,403, while the wider Metropolitan Borough has a population of 262,400. Bolton originated as a small settlement on moorland known as Bolton Le Moors.
During the English Civil War, the town was a Parliamentarian outpost in an area strongly loyal to the Crown, and was consequently stormed by three thousand Royalist troops led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine in 1644. In what became known as the Bolton Massacre, 1,600 residents were killed, while 700 were taken captive.
Bolton Wanderers Football Club plays their home games at Bolton University Stadium, and the WBA world light-welterweight champion Amir Khan was born in the city. Cultural attractions include The Octagon Theatre and the Bolton Museum & Art Gallery, and one of the first public libraries established following the Public Libraries Act of 1850.
