Birstall is a large village and civic parish in Charnwood Borough in Leicestershire, England. It is three miles north of Leicester City Centre, part of the wider Leicester urban area. It is Charnwoods largest village, and the 2001 census recorded its population as just slightly lower than that of nearby town of Syston. Birstall lies off the A6 and is the last large settlement before Leicester upon arriving from the north. Birstall therefore forms part of the urban area of Leicester.

The centre of the village is located off the A6, on Sybson Road. The village contains two supermarkets, a garden centre, and various other shops. There are a number of schools including Highcliffe Primary School, Riverside Primary School, Hallam Fields Primary School and The Cedars Academy. The village contains the St James the Great church, Birstall, the Roman Catholic Church St Theresa, and the Birstall Methodist Church. There is a large housing estate to the north-west of the village, leading from Greengate Lane.

The Grand Union Canal runs across the lower part of the village, separating it from Watermead Country Park, a set of lakes at the base of the Soar valley that has been designated a recreation and public park. The Great Central Railway Steam Railway has its southern terminus close to the village, with the A6 meeting Leicesters Outer Ring Road at Red Hill Circle. Just north of Red Hill Circle, to the west of the A6, is the Red Hill Filling Station, which became a Grade II listed building in 2012. The railway line also forms the border at the south end of Birstall Golf Club.

North of the village, the A6 meets the A46 Leicester West bypass, and continues to Loughborough via the Soar Valley. The symbol of Birstall is the Cedar Tree. The original tree stood on the Roman Way. It was once on the site of Birstall Hall, which is now being demolished.
