Bingley is a market town and civic parish within the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, situated on the River Aire and Leeds & Liverpool Canal, with a population of 18,294 as of the 2011 census. Bingley railway station is located in the town centre, while Leeds Bradford International Airport is 10 miles (16 km) away.

The B6265 links Bingley with Keighley. Historically a part of West Yorkshire, Bingley appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as “Bingheleia”.

The hillford has been replaced with the Irish Bridge. Bingley was an estate that extended for many miles up and down the River Aire, upstream at Maeley, in the suburbs of Keighley, and downstream at Cottingley. Bingley became a market town when the market charter was granted by King John in 1212.

According to a poll tax return from 1379, there were 130 households in Bingley, which is likely around 500. The neighbouring towns of Bradford, Leeds, and Halifax had around half that number. At that time, Bingley was the largest city in the region.

No records record what happened to Bingley during the 14th-century Black Death, which gripped Europe. About one-third of all the people in Europe died from the pestilence, which at times destroyed entire towns and villages. According to a poll tax register from 1379, there were no survivors in nearby Bolton Town, which was liable for the tax. It seems that Bingley might have been comparatively easy.
