Beighton is a village six miles south-east of the Sheffield town centre, and is now classified as the citys Historic Township. Due to extensive development, the village became a part of the City of Sheffield in 1967, also seeing it transferred from Derbyshire into the newly created County of South Yorkshire, England. During most of the late 17th and 19th centuries, the village was noted for the manufacture of rimmed tools, with Thomas Staniforth & Cos Sickle Works being based at nearby Hackenthorpe. The former village was home to a number of schools, including Beighton Nursery & Infant School and Brook House Junior School.
Today, the village has seen a great deal of development in terms of housing; however, it retains a rural feel, along with villages including Eckington, Mosborough, Ridgeway and Dronfield, because of its position on the edge of Sheffield. The earliest reference to the village comes from ninth-century Anglo-Saxon records of landowners in Derbyshire. The village was known as Bectune at this time. The hamlet was then situated at the edge of Great Forest, which is located in the area of where Rother Valley Country Park is located today, and stretches over areas in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, West Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire. Today, the only remaining part of the Great Forest is Sherwood Forest.
The region was settled by British invaders known as Angles. The invasion occurred in the late Romanic period, about 500 AD. Prior to these invasions, the region was part of Kingdom of Mercia, the local River Wear formed a border with neighbouring kingdom of Northumbria. Being so close to the border meant that hamlets were vulnerable to the invasion.
The Sheffield Museum holds many bones and stone tools excavated from the area during the 19th century dating from the Neolithic, which shows that the area was inhabited well before Angles settled. The village is noted in Domesday Book in 1086, having 15 households, the land being owned by Roger Poitevin.
