Baildon is a city and civic parish within Bradford Metropolitan Borough, in the English region of West Yorkshire, within the historical boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is located 3 miles (5 km) north of Bradford city centre. The town forms a contiguous urban area with Shipley and Bradford, which is part of West Yorkshires built-up region. Other surrounding outskirts include Shipley in the south, and Saltaire in the west.
As of the 2011 census, Baildon ward had a population of 15,360. Baildon is known to have been inhabited for many centuries; several cups-and-rings stones at Baildon Moor show evidence of bronze age occupation. Baildon Moor has numerous outcrops of gritstones bearing a large number of Prehistoric Cup-and-Ring marks.
A eroded, disturbed bank represents the remains of an Iron Age settlement known as Soldiers Trench, which is sometimes confused for Bronze Age Stone Circles. A bronze age cup-marked stone is embedded within the bank.
Baildon is recorded in Domesday Book as Beldone and Beldune. In 1066, it was held by a Gospatric, a son of Arnketil, and had passed by 1086 to Erneis of Bouron. Baildon had two manor houses, one at Hollcliffe, and another at Lower Baildon. In the 1960s, the Hall Cliffe House was demolished and replaced by Iain Clough Hall.
During the industrial revolution, Baildon developed the woollen industry; Westgate House was built in 1814 by the Ambler family, prominent in wool trading, with a part of the warehouse in the building being Feathers bakery, which is now Nine Cafe, adjoining the mill, and is now Westgate Bar. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, conditions deteriorated in Bradford, with widespread poverty and poor health; Baildon began to develop as a commuter town alongside neighboring Shipley. In the later years of the 20th century, the West Riding suffered from an economic decline, as the textiles and engineering industries gradually closed.
