Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester, England. The population was 45,198 at the 2011 census. Historically a part of Lancashire, it is situated on the northern banks of the Tame, at the foothills of the Pennines, and is located 6.2 miles (10.0 km) east of Manchester.

Evidence has been found for Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Viking activities at Ashton-under-Lyne. The “Ashton” part of the towns name likely dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, from the Old English meaning “settlement of the Ash Tree”. The origins of the suffix “under-Lyne” are less clear; it may have come from the Brittonic-derived word lemo, meaning elm, or from Ashtons proximity to the Pennines.

In medieval times, Ashton-under-Lyne was a parish and borough, with Old Ashton Hall held by de Asshetons, lords of the manor. Granted a royal charter in 1414, the manor covered an agrarian land area composed of bogs, heathland, and a series of villages and small towns. Until the cotton trade was introduced in 1769, Ashton was considered to be “bare, muddy, and nearly useless”.

The milling system, as well as the textile manufacturing of the industrial revolution, initiated a process of non-planned urbanisation of the district, and Ashton had emerged by the middle of the 19th century as a major mill town, situated on a confluence of canals and recently built railways. Ashton-under-Lynes transportation networks allowed an economic boom in the spinning, weaving, and coal-mining industries, leading to it being granted township status in 1847. In the mid-20th century, imports of cheaper overseas goods led to a reduction of Ashtons heavy industry, but the town continued to prosper as a center of trade and Ashton Market is one of the largest open-air markets in the UK. Ashton town centre is today the location of Ashton Arcades, a two-storey, 140,000 square feet (13,000 m2) shopping complex (opened in 1995), Ladysmith shopping centre, an open-air mall, and the large Ikea store.

In 2018, Ashton Town Centre saw a major new development, including a new university campus for Tameside College, new Council offices, and a library. Improvements were also made to the outdoor market including new kiosks and stalls. In 2019, work began on the brand-new Transport Interchange for the city centre, making it far easier to access the city by bus and Metrolink.
