Appleby Parva, or Appleby the Small, a parish in the parish of Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, is a small village approximately one mile (1.6 km) south-west of Appleby Church. It is situated on the A444, just south of a motorway crossing, between Ashby-de-la-Zouch to Tamworth, and between Atherstone to Burton-upon-Trent, and at junction 11 with the M42/A42. Appleby Magna and Appleby Parva are commonly known as Appleby jointly.

The villages were also calculated as being home to a majority of Great Britains 2000 population, according to a study led by Professor Danny Dorling. Appleby Parva was initially thought to have been a Danish settlement, while Appleby Magna is thought to have been an earlier settlement, dating back before the Anglo-Saxons. The name is derived from the portmanteau of api, meaning water or flow, and be(r), meaning settlement.

Appleby appears three times in Domesday Book, with Appleby Magna and Appleby Parva recorded separately. Appleby Magna is listed as being in part Derbyshire and part Leicestershire, where Appleby Parva is listed as being in Leicestershire. Both of these moved over the border a number of times, but were part of Leicestershire from 1897. Appleby Parva is listed in the Domesday Book as being in the possession of Robert de Ferrers, 1st Earl of Derby, who held it for a period of time under his father, Henry de Ferrers, who was a French nobleman and a companion of William I.

The Hamlet was valued at 0.5 pence, taxable value at 1 geld unit, population of 4 households, and 4 freemen. The Hamlet is thought to have been relatively undeveloped before the Norman invasion in 1066; the land lies on the base of a hill, and was not well-drained, and was therefore not farmed by Saxons or Danes: the settlement did not properly develop until after 1066, under the rule of their new French overlord. There is thought to have been a degree of ethnic division in the area, with Appleby Magna (owned by Burton Abbey and Lady Godiva) being inhabited by mostly Anglo-Saxon villagers, while Appleby Parva was inhabited by a small band of Normans.
