Aldridge is a town and former civic parish within Walsall Borough, in West Midlands, England. It was historically a village which was part of Staffordshire up to 1974. It is 3 miles (4.8 km) from Braunhills, 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Walsall, 6 miles (9.7 km) from Sutton Coldfield, and 7 miles (11 km) from Lichfield. Aldridge has a mix of public and private housing, a large shopping centre built in the 1960s, with reasonably high occupancy rates, and a number of industrial estates supporting heavy and light industry. The name “Aldridge” is from Anglo-Saxon alr or alre+wic, meaning alder (tree)+village.
Another suggestion is that the name “Aldridge” means “farm on a promontory, surrounded by alder trees”, derived from Old English alr and wic. It is recorded as Alrewic in Domesday Book 1086, when it was valued at 15s, with a population of seven households; the lord was Robert (dOilly) and the chief tenant was William, son of Ansculf. The name was recorded as Alrewich and Allerwych during the 12th century. Aldridge began as a small agricultural settlement, farming being the most common occupation up to the 19th century. In the 1800s, Aldridge became an industrial city, with coal pits and limekilns. The areas coal and clay encouraged many to establish coal pits and brickworks.
Aldridge clay was particularly helpful for making blue bricks. The census for 1881 shows the mines and the brickworks as major employers. Because the coal and clay under the east side of Aldridge (towards Stonnall) lay far below the surface, extracting that coal and clay would have been economically unfeasible. As a result, farms continued to dominate the eastern side, although a sand quarry was established, and remains, at Birch Lane.
In the 20th century, the town centre at Aldridge was built with modern shops, along with a Council House. After the Second World War, Aldridge became a town, or suburban, in suburban Birmingham. A small airport called Aldridge Airfield was used in World War II, after which it was used for passenger services. Aldridge became a township in Staffordshire in 1894.
Other villages in the district included Pelsall, Walsall Wood, Clayhanger, and Stally. These areas began to develop significantly from the 1930s, with the construction of privately owned houses, mostly purchased by families moving out from central Walsall. The town area of Aldridge was amalgamated with Brownhills in 1966, forming Aldridge-Brownhills, and later became part of an expanded Walsall Metropolitan Borough in 1974.
