Twickenham is a borough of suburbs of London, England. It is situated 9.9 miles (15.9 km) south-west of Charing Cross, on the Thames. Historically part of Middlesex, since 1965 it has been part of the London Borough of Richmond on Thames, with the Borough Councils administrative headquarters located in the area. The population, including those from St Margarets and Whitton, was 62,148 at the 2011 census.

Twickenham is home to Rugby Football Union, and hundreds of thousands of spectators attend Twickenham Stadium every year. The historic riverside district has an extensive network of 18th-century buildings and leisure grounds, many of which remain untouched. Three magnificent period houses are located in the district, all accessible to the public: York House, Marble Hill, and Strawberry Hill House.

As a suburb of London, many of its residents commute to Central London, or locally work in retail, hospitality, education, or at one of many professional firms that are based in the borough. The council has been making efforts to re-develop the Twickenham town centre, which has been struggling because of the heavy competition from Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston-upon-Thames. It is different to most city centres in that there are less retail shops, especially chains, and there are more cafes, restaurants, banks and estate agents. There has been an extensive programme of improvements to the town centre, including the repaving of Yorkstone, the construction of a new arts centre, as well as improved gardens and riverside walks. However, plans for Glorianas bargehouse at Orleans Gardens, and moving a youth centre from Heatham House to allow that building to be converted into a hotel proved controversial, and were dropped.
