Allerton is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, which is increasingly a part of the conurbation of Bradford. With around 12,000 residents, the village is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west-north-west of Bradford. Allerton is recorded in Domesday Book as Willsden-cum-Allerton. Locals of the outskirts pronounce it as Ollerton, older than Al. Allerton is from Old English, meaning a clump of Alder trees on the farm or in the settlement.
Allerton is mentioned as a settlement of two pounds, 10 shillings, belonging to one Ilbert, the lord of the manor, in 1066. It is also known that the settlement was wasted during the 11th century, likely because of harryings in the north led by William the Conqueror, in reprisal for the Viking-influenced uprisings then taking place in northern England.
Chellow Dene is a local nature reserve to the north of Allerton. It is a forested valley, home to two Victorian water tanks, and is a local wildlife haven. A considerable part of the village, mainly to the south, was built over in the decades after World War II as council housing, and so contains more than half the population of Thornton and Allerton wards, to the west of Bradford.
In 1825, at the villages eastern edge from Bradford, Bradfords public dispensary opened on Darley Street, moving to Westgate as the Bradford Infirmary in 1843. The hospital became the Bradford Royal Infirmary (known to locals as the BRI) to mark Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee. It joined the national health service in 1948.
Seabrook Potato Crisps was founded in 1945 in Bradford, with the company opening their first plant in Allerton in 1956, when Charles and Colin Brook converted an old Allerton Liberal Club into their factory. The companys Allerton plant closed in 2004 and was eventually demolished in 2015 after a fire, in 2016 an Aldi store was built on the site, production was then moved to the companys Princeville site, also in Bradford.
A new housing development at the villages immediate west end — known as Huron Reach — comprising almost 300 homes began building at the end of 2016. The development had been scrapped earlier following opposition from the wards local councillors and residents, and remains controversial because of its location within the Green Belt.
