Documents to Take to the Driving Test

Many learner drivers are turned away from their practical driving test because they have failed to read the DVSA confirmation email letter properly. The email clearly states that the test candidate must bring their UK provisional driving licence, their theory passed certificate and a car for the driving test.

Provisional Driving License

Some test candidates have been known to bring driving licences from other countries or even an international driving licence. These licences will not be accepted by the driving examiners. The only licence accepted will be a UK driving licence. You must present your UK provisional driving licence to the examiner. The only exception is if you’re upgrading from an automatic licence to a manual in which case, you may present your full automatic licence.

The UK driving licence, whether provisional or full, is only valid for 10 years at a time. The test candidate must ensure that the licence is valid before attending for the practical test. The driving examiner will ask you to confirm if your name and address on the licence are correct. If either your name or your address has changed, this is not a problem. However, you must be prepared to show proof of your new name or address.

Theory Pass Certificate

The driving test booking confirmation letter also states that you should bring your theory passed certificate with you. If this is not available for some reason, you may bring your theory passed certificate number instead. Your theory passed if the number can be accessed online at the government website by typing lost theory certificate on Google.

Car for Driving Test

Finally, the booking confirmation email states that you must bring a suitable vehicle to the driving test. Most learner drivers tend to use their driving instructors cars. However, if your driving instructor is not available, you may hire a dual control car along with an emergency driving instructor from DTC UK. Although not mentioned on the booking confirmation letter, the learner driver must also take their glasses if they wear them to read a number plate.
